GUIDE 10
How to Make Somaek
Korea’s famous soju + beer combination.
WHAT IS IT?
Somaek combines soju and beer. Ratios and drinking customs vary widely by group and situation.
HOW TO EAT IT
Try a small amount of soju with several parts beer as a starting point.
Pour gently and taste before adjusting the balance.
When sharing with others, offer a pour and receive drinks politely.

Take it one relaxed bite at a time.
LOCAL TIP
Some people use two hands when receiving a drink from an elder, but the mood and group matter more than rigid rules.
TABLE TIP
Refill Your Side DishesNeed more banchan? Just ask the staff. Most Korean restaurants are happy to refill common side dishes at no extra charge, and some have a self-service banchan bar. A few dishes made with more expensive ingredients may be limited or not refillable. Don’t be shy—asking for more banchan is completely normal in Korea.
There is no mandatory ratio and no pressure to drink—choose what feels right for you.
